DAY IN THE LIFE #15 : MONDAY, 30th JULY 2012


EATS OF THE DAY
meal 1, 0800hrs
  • two tablespoons of baked beans 
  • 1 whole egg + 2 egg whites 
  • coffee 
  • half a slice wholegrain bread 
meal 2, 1300hrs
  • two pieces of tofu 
  • one cup cooked spinach 
meal 3, 1630hrs
  • two slices papaya 
  • one slice wholegrain bread with sugarfree blackberry jam 
  • one cup yogurt with sugarfree blackberry jam 
meal 4, 2030hrs
  • two tablespoons of baked beans 
  • 1 whole egg + 2 egg whites 
  • coffee
  • half cup rolled oats + half a small banana + tbsp raisins 


DEEDS OF THE DAY

have been on a baked beans kick lately. i used to eat oats for breakfast every single day, but now it's baked beans turn to have a spin!

today was my last day at Shape magazine. came into the office to pack up / say bye to everyone. part of me felt truly forlorn and torn at leaving, but i guess that's the way life is, isn't it? the very least i can say is that this is definitely not the end of my time in the writing industry! i'm very glad and truly appreciate that i already know what i want to do, that this is what i delight in and enjoy.

went for a jog in the evening, which worked for only 3x640m laps. it turned into a skipping workout after that as leonard came and passed me his skipping rope. speed skipping is really good at getting you pumped and sweaty!

lastly, this may sound taboo but.. I FEEL FAT TODAY. there, i said it. the 'F' word. i know i'm supposed to be a 'health hippie', with happy positive vibes simply radiating from me but hey, i'm human too! have been feeling bloated and sluggish since yesterday. maybe it's just plain old hormones acting up? *groan* oh well, it's not going to stay like this forever! tomorrow will be a better day. :)

on that note, strawberry jam with lowfat cream cheese on wholegrain bread is super yums!

wearing a basketball jersey at home because i have just so many of them from my high school years. can't bear to throw them out or give them away (they have my name on them, who would want them anyway) as they represent something which i was madly passionate about at a point of time. however since i rarely play ball now, i choose to wear them to sleep instead. they're the comfiest pj's ever! :)

monday will officially be my last day at SHAPE magazine. i'm having funny mixed feelings about completing internship. on one hand, i won't deny that i'm excited to be having holidays (and train like a beast!!), on the other hand i feel a little sad about leaving the writing industry and more importantly everyone at BluInc who has been so, so kind to me.

merina in fact told me "feel free to take monday off" nevertheless i will be going in to tie up loose ends and say bye to everyone.

hopefully i'll be able to get the skipping rope leonard offered and add that to my workout as well :)

SHAPE NIGHT RUN 2012

finally blogging about SNR 2012!

as i've mentioned before, i was taking part in the 11.8km category. what you guys didn't know is that i paid rm50 for it, when i was actually entitled to run it for free. however i signed up before i entered SHAPE, so there was no way of me knowing that anyway. trust life to pull one on me!

even though it was a night run, BluInc staff were required to there from 4pm. headed there with neha, mira, and john (mira's boyfriend.) adelina pulled into the parking lot just the same time as we got there.

we walked towards the location agreed for staff to meet. this was my first time ever in putrajaya and i have to say, it's a really nice town!

helped to carry some stuff around, saw to columbia asia and linora. once i finished, the others had some stuff to do and were nowhere to be seen, so i went off to look around and take pictures on my own.

went back looking for the girls, and they'd already sorted out their stuff so we were free to hang out now. changed into our running vests and i demanded for pictures to be taken!

did i also mention that i love the apparel that the sponsor (skechers) provided for us? following the norm, most running vests are the classic colours of red / blue / yellow / white / black. while i'm not saying those colours are unattractive, sometimes variety helps to keep things fresh.


as dusk approached, linora and fiqri from red.fm took the stage and whipped up the crowd's excitement!


spotted a couple of parents with their kids in tow. judging by the picture, i'm guessing that they bring their kids along to other running events that they join. major inspiration for me to do the same when i'm a mum!

i hope that i will be able to continue participating in runs as much as i can for as long as i can! it's truly something you need to experience for yourself. the excitement in the air, the infectious energy, the smiles and camaraderie.. it's just so uplifting, inspiring and motivating which makes you glad to be alive and be blessed with the ability to go forward.

my category of the women's open 11.8km was slated to flag off at 8pm. i managed to sneak across the barrier somewhere right at the front, just before they closed it off a few seconds later. my subeditor michele and the men's health editor gareth were ushered straight in front of the starting point. i thick-facedly weaved my way through the all the other runners so i was able to stand right next to michele, heh. i'm sure others were thinking to themselves "who does this gawky young girl think she is to be entitled to stand there? she has a lot of nerve!"

the gun went off and goodness! i never again wish to start directly at the front. like a wave breaking forth, the crowd surged and broke forward with incredible strength. i had no intention to rush the beginning and burn out like in SCKLM so i had planned to pace myself. however, the other runners had different ideas and it was a flurry of bodies all pushing, pushing, pushing. got kicked and shoved myself, though not seriously. 

after the initial 200metres, the crowd thinned out somewhat and i was able to breathe a little easier.

however, barely having covered the first kilometer, a stitch affected the left side of my torso. curses! another thing ; it was COLD. much colder than an ordinary night i might have experienced anywhere else. probably because of the abundance of greenery, plus absence of traffic and buildings. 

as much as the stitch pained me, i kept up running as normally these tend to fade off after a while. nevertheless this one stayed with me throughout the whole race. in an attempt to arrest the discomfort, i pushed my index and middle fingers into the stitch and pressed hard. it did help a bit, at least there was now something else i could focus on apart from the niggling pain.

did i mention there were hills? yep. they were there, if i'm not mistaken about 5 or more, standing there stoically and unforgivingly, as us poor runners chugged up their slopes, sweat beading our brows. every time i saw another hill in the distance, i would groan inwardly, then take a deep breath and with much effort, continue plodding upwards and forwards.

i had hoped to finish in 1:20, but completed in 1:25. oh well, you know what they say ;

"Aim for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."


1:25 might be more than what i had aimed for, but it's not too far off! rest assured i'll get there sooner or later.

as a member of SHAPE, i'm so glad the event went smoothly and was a success! many of the contributors / sponsors commended us and twentyfirst century sports for the run, saying they would like to be part of it again for the future. i was so happy to hear the positive feedback from participants and other parties involved.

life has been busy for me, yes, but i wouldn't ask for it any other way!

Tuesday, 10th july - had an event at KL Golf & Country Club for the official launch of Victoria Crest. their very elegant sounding name belies the fact that they are a manufacturer of premium ready made halal foods ; think burger patties, sausages, and pies.

Wednesday, 11th july - attended the GNC event for the launch of their new collagen range at Hilton Doubletree KL.

Thursday, 12th july - TWG official media launch at pavilion. this event was awesome! it was very english high tea, with delicately gold tipped teacups and saucers, beautiful live orchestra music, and guests dressed up to the nines. obviously the food served was a major factor ; wagyu beef burgers, seared chicken breast, other cold savories i know not the name of. and the deserts, oh! hazelnut truffle cream puffs, mango tarts with gold leaf, chocolate eclairs, decadent raspberry with cream on top of macaroon shells, they were simply divine.

Friday, 13th july - mum's birthday at Victoria Station / darling nicole came to stay with us for one night.

Saturday, 14th july - worked and ran at Shape Night Run, Putrajaya. a more detailed post to follow.

breakfast - banana chocolate oatmeal. just add cocoa powder to your regular oatmeal.

at the victoria crest event. VC claims to be 95-98% fat free, without and fillers or stabilisers, and uses only the choice parts of the animal (chicken breast, lamb shank, beef loin / rump) and their efforts certainly showed through. most sausages are lacking in taste and have a mushy texture, but theirs were full-flavored, with the meat showing through. now that's what i call quality!

some pieces of sausages (from a pleasing variety ; lamb & cranberry, smoked chicken, lamb & beef, chicken cheese, etc), a small slice of pie, a spoonful of potato salad, and a healthy load of cherry tomatoes.

they may be manufacturers of meat products, but me here loved the cherry tomatoes that were on the buffet table. honestly, the best cherry tomatoes i've ever eaten.

BOXED UP


it would be great if i could spend all day in the kitchen to make healthy home cooked food for every meal . but let's face it, now that i've had a glimpse of what the working life is like, i know that it's not easily feasible nor practical. however, i still think i've managed to eat pretty healtily.

no matter who you are or what you're doing, eating a nutritious and balanced diet is important for everyone! here's some advice for those who have to spend long hours in the office, or long hours sitting through back to back lectures.

Prep early
when i cook at home, i usually make more than one serving. once i'm done cooking, i set aside a portion for my meal and box up the remainder to go in the freezer. alternately, you could also use leftovers from yesterday's dinner. in the office the next day, i just set it in the microwave for a few minutes and i have a healthy homecooked meal without much trouble at all! another plus is that i get to save money since i don't have to buy food. one dish i've been eating quite frequently is baked beans + eggs (just combine the two and microwave, you don't even need to use any oil!) one very very versatile food i've found to be, is eggs. hardboiled, microwaved, scrambled, you can prepare them in so many ways and they're so yummy and nutritious!

seriously, i love eggs. :)

Plan ahead
for example, today i'd already planned what i was going to eat, keeping in mind to have a good balance of protein, carbs, and fibre. when i reached the office, i had a slice of wholegrain bread + natural peanutbutter for a midmorning snack. my boxed lunch was baked beans + 2 eggs, at teatime i had some plain yogurt with a drizzle of honey and then later oatmeal. make an effort to meet your requirement from all the food groups as well as taking into consideration the vitamins / minerals that they provide.

If it's not there, you can't eat it
while it may be a good idea to some to keep a store of food in the office, personally it would never work for me. why? because i'd be likely to keep munching out of boredom! for instance, i love the jacobs wholegrain biscuits (you can have 6 biscuits for only 105cals) but i'm pretty sure i would definitely eat more than 6 if i had a tin of them sitting on my desk. hence, i only bring 6-8 biscuits each time. that way, there's no chance of me overdoing it. ;)

Eat on schedule
rather than have a huge meal in one go at lunchtime or mindlessly snack throughout the day, it is my personal opinion that it is more beneficial to split up your food intake into a few slots. my allotted eating times and example of foods i normally eat would be something like this :

1030hrs - midmorning snack (half a health bar, one slice of wholegrain bread + peanutbutter)
1230hrs - lunch (lean protein + vegies, e.g. spinach / tofu, baked beans / egg, chicken breast / cabbage, mushrooms / egg, tuna / tomatoes)
1530hrs - tea (yogurt, papaya)
1700hrs - snack (oatmeal)

by breaking up your meals into smaller portions and eating more frequently, you never go hungry and are able to have more variety!

DEEDS OF THE DAY

today was a rather chill day in the office, the reason being that we'd closed the magazine (as in sent it off to the printers after finalizing everything) just a day or two ago. hence we've all stopped to take a deep breath at the moment. spent the day reading health blogs / websites, making a few calls to clients, and going through sources for future articles. better appreciate this lull while it lasts!

as i mentioned before, magazines get sent all kinds of stuff. we've been just stockpiling everything, to the point of bursting. today, deputy editor michele decided that we have to clear out all the stuff. it was so fun to be able to discuss and choose what we wanted from the collection that we have! creams, toners, polishes, blushers, masks, scrubs, lipsticks, glosses, the lot! and from good brands such as loreal, sisley, clarins, cellnique, benefit, schwarzkopf, laura mercier, origins and others. 


i would have been glad to have gotten anything at all since i'm only a lowly intern, heh! however the others were kind enough to share out the stuff with me as well, ended up with a shampoo + conditioner set, bb cream, toner, facial moisturizer, and a lip balm. :D 

well that's all for my monday!

over the previous weekend, i had COPA IBA captainball tournament on saturday, then a dinner gathering on sunday. didn't take any pics though (i know, i know, i'm a bad blogger) so i'm waiting to see what comes up on facebook to share with you guys here.
